Etsy at SXSW

For those of you not “in the know”, March means South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX. Originally started as a music festival to drum up business

while the university students were away on Spring Break, SXSW is now a multi-week, interactive, film and music festival of international renown. Last weekend’s focus was the interactive portion of the festival, and part of the festivities included Etsy-sponsored events at one of the bars on 6th Street.

The Austin Etsy street team put together a “Wall of Wow” display inside the main room, with items from several of the Austin-area Etsy artisans.  With t-shirts, textiles, jewelry, and other crafts, the Wall was a great way to showcase the wide range of items available on Etsy. Austin-area Etsy volunteers staffed the event, answering questions and handing out business card swatch books to folks who were interested.

If you’re not familiar with Etsy, I’ll give you a word of warning: it can be totally and completely addictive! The site serves as an online marketplace for thousands (tens of thousands?) of sellers, with a focus on handmade goods. You’ll find clothing, purses, jewelry, art, photography, vintage goods… more stuff than you’d ever imagine. I had several people tell me that they “…bought every Christmas gift on Etsy last year.”
